An Army bomb disposal team have destroyed an item that was found in a town centre.

The area around Market Hall in Darwen was cordoned off after it was found earlier, Lancashire Police said.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence said specialists attended after being called by police.

“The item was safely moved to a safe distance and destroyed by demolition,” she added.

The nature of the item is not yet clear but police said they had since reopened the area.
